After graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art in 1994, the Hong Kong native got her start in fashion when Donna Karan handpicked her to work at the prestigious label in New York City. She honed her craft under Karan’s tutelage and later at Calvin Klein, refining iconic staples for both the brand’s founder and his successor Francisco Costa. Channeling her entrepreneurial spirit into sustainable fashion early on, Beryl founded Ajna in 2008, one of the first eco-conscious labels of its time. Continually ignited by new ideas and industry shifts, she established Essence Studio to offer design development for fashion designer brands while sparking conversation around responsibility and innovation. ESSENEE is the latest brand endeavor with the mission of crafting meaningful connections - to science, philosophy, heritage, artisans, our planet, and one another. 

Throughout her consulting career, she has interconnected with leading icons across the fashion sphere - from assisting Diane Von Furstenberg on vibrant knit wrap dresses to translating Narciso Rodriguez’s penchant for minimalism into enduring wardrobe essentials to witnessing Zac Posen’s technical prowess dazzle celebrity clients in socially resplendent gowns.

In 2009, Beryl was named "designer to watch" by WWD and was semi-finalist for Ecco Domani Fashion Award in 2011. Her work for Ajna has been featured in Earth Pledge event, The Green Shows, UNCTAD's EcoChic event in Geneva, Thinkmag, Whole Living, Dream Sequins, Sublime Magazine.

Beryl designs knitwear that redefines typical sweaters through a mindful blend of new and old, using computerized knitting technology with meticulous details while still honoring the wisdom of handicraft tradition.

She continually strives to distill larger social narratives for promoting diversity and inclusion through design and production innovation that serve greater aspirations.
